The Confucius Institute was officially inaugurated on September 18, 2011. The opening ceremony was attended by Wu Bangguo, then Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, along with senior officials from Hanban, representatives from the Chinese Embassy in the Republic of Belarus, and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.

The main mission of the Confucius Institute is to promote and spread Chinese language and culture. In February 2012, the first enrolment for Chinese language courses took place – two groups with a total of 28 students. Currently, classes are running at the Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages (BSUFL) and at secondary education institutions across the Republic of Belarus. The total number of people studying Chinese with teachers provided by the Confucius Institute at BSUFL exceeds 3,000. With the assistance of the Confucius Institute at BSUFL, a Confucius Classroom was opened in May 2016 at Gymnasium No. 1 named after E.F. Karsky in Grodno. In December 2016, a Confucius Classroom was opened at Gymnasium No. 3 in Mogilev. In the second half of 2025, a Confucius Classroom is planned to open at Secondary School No. 7 named after A.I. Voloshin in Baranovichi.

Each year, the key events for promoting Chinese culture include the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival; Confucius Institute Day at BSUFL; International Confucius Institute Day; the ‘Professional Communication in Chinese’ translation contest; the ‘Open Lesson by a Chinese Teacher’ contest; the ‘Legends of the Celestial Empire’ Chinese culture festival-competition; and the Chinese song and performance contest. Teachers also conduct workshops on calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese knot tying, and more.

In December 2013, the Confucius Institute at BSUFL was awarded the honorary title of ‘Confucius Institute of the Year’, alongside 27 other top Confucius Institutes out of more than 500 worldwide.

The Confucius Institute at BSUFL organises and administers the international HSK Chinese language exams. Since 2013, more than 3,500 people have taken these exams. In December 2023, the Confucius Institute received an award for excellent organisation of the international HSK Chinese language exams.

In February 2015, the Chinese Culture Centre at the Confucius Institute of BSUFL was officially opened in Dormitory No. 4 of BSUFL, located in the Student Village at 97 Dzerzhinsky Avenue. The Centre offers free cultural events for anyone interested in Chinese culture.

Since 2012, more than 300 students have studied at Chinese universities on Confucius Institute scholarships. Each year, students have the opportunity to participate in a summer study camp at Southeast University in Nanjing, BSUIR's partner university within the Confucius Institute framework. The camp programme includes Chinese language instruction as well as an excursion and cultural programme.
